JMW at a glance
Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk (the foundation for Jewish Social Services) was set up shortly after the war “to provide, coordinate and enhance all social services to Jews in the Netherlands”. This aim, which is derived from JMW’s constitution, still determines the character of the organisation, in at least three ways:
JMW is active all over the Netherlands;
JMW’s target group is limited to the Jewish community;
JMW’s field of action is wide and includes various types of social work.
Many requests for help by JMW’s target group are still determined or influenced by the War, which expresses itself in the extent to which the target group appeals to JMW: 10% to 15% of the Dutch Jewish community, consisting of 45,000 individuals, turn to our organisation for help each year.
JMW’s work is organised into three departments:
Social Work (individual counselling, group social work, the Victims of Persecution (1940-1945) Benefits Act , youth social work, social work for refugees and migrants);
Care and Prevention (activities for the elderly, volunteer work and community work);
Home Care (family care and home nursing).
JMW’s services are based on the “Model for Integrated Care”, which was developed by the organisation and is aimed at offering clients a type of assistance which is as light as possible. This is why clients of our Department of Care and Prevention are referred to as “participants”. They can choose from a range of activities, usually for groups, aimed at strengthening people’s sense of their own identity and preventing loneliness and isolation. Both in this department and in the department of Social Work the support by JMW’s volunteer organisation is of considerable importance: a total of 90 volunteers offered their help to more than 230 clients in approximately 6,700 contacts in 2002.
JMW’s policy is explicitly aimed at reaching the so-called “unaffiliated Jews” (those who are not members of a religious congregation). They represent the majority of the present day Jewish community.
JMW’s head office is in Amsterdam. The other offices are located in Rotterdam, The Hague, Arnhem, Enschede, Groningen and Eindhoven.
JMW’s work is subsidised for the larger part by the State and by the local governments of the three larger cities.
Insufficient subsidies for a number of activities, as well as activities which are not subsidised at all, make it necessary that private Jewish funds (such as Cefina) provide substantial financial support in order to limit our operating deficit.
Our total income, however, is insufficient to finance the total range of JMW’s services. JMW is therefore forced to appeal to private individuals for financial support. Each donation is appreciated greatly by JMW.
